After leading Friday’s first Formula One practice in Hungary, the McLaren driver returned to the top of the time sheet in P2 with a quick lap of 121:995.
Following the 2008 World Champion in the top five were 2007 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen (1:22:180), Bruno Senna, Felipe Massa and points leader Fernando Alonso.
Positions six through 10 on the time sheet belonged to Jenson Button, Paul Di Resta, Sebastian Vettel, Romain Grosjean and Michael Schumacher.
Free Practice Two wasn’t all good for Lotus’ Grosjean and Mercedes’ Schumacher, however, as both men spun off course in separate incidents.
Grosjean took the first detour, spinning at Turn 7 just nine minutes into the 90-minute session and damaging his front wing after colliding with the barriers.
Schumacher’s incident came much later, about an hour in, when the German plunged off a damp track at Turn 12 and clipped the barriers.
The seven-time champion was uninjured but the same was not true of his car.
Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix is the 11th of 20 events on the 2012 Formula One calendar, and the last event before the annual month-long August break.
Coming into the weekend, Alonso leads the drivers’ standings by 34 points over Mark Webber and 44 over Vettel. Raikkonen (-56) and Hamilton (-62) complete the top five.
Alonso leads the series in victories with three, while Webber, with two victories, is the season’s only other winner of multiple races.
